Hongmarie Martinez, Psy.D. is a permit holder who specializes in working with children, adolescents, adults, and families who are struggling with anxiety disorders, depression, stress and emotion regulation difficulties, behavioral challenges, school-based issues, trauma, grief/loss, and family issues. Dr. Martinez utilizes an array of evidenced-based approaches to best meet the specific goals and needs of each individual and family. She is passionate about working collaboratively with clients through the use of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to identify their presenting challenges and develop effective strategies to create the desired change in their lives.
Dr. Martinez graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in criminology from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. She continued her education at Rutgers University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, where she earned her master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology. Dr. Martinez is also a New Jersey Certified School Psychologist (NJCSP). During her clinical training, Dr. Martinez worked with populations spanning from children to older adults, those of varying cultural backgrounds, and those with a diverse range of mental health issues. Dr. Martinez has worked in multiple NJ public elementary schools on Child Study Teams conducting psychological evaluations to determine students’ special education eligibility and provided consultation to teachers and school staff to support students’ academic and behavioral needs. Dr. Martinez has also provided therapeutic services in a school-based mental health clinic for several years at Piscataway Township School District, conducting individual, group, and family therapy to students grades kindergarten through twelfth who presented with behavioral difficulties, social skills challenges, mood and anxiety disorders, suicidal ideation/self-harm, trauma/post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), grief/loss, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and identity issues. Her work in schools has contributed to her understanding of the multitude of barriers that may interfere with children’s difficulties related to school and to her focus on collaborating within multi-disciplinary teams to help youth achieve their academic and social-emotional potential. Dr. Martinez has further enjoyed working with young adults through her experience providing individual therapy and outreach services to undergrad and graduate students at Rider University College Counseling Center who presented with a variety of mental health challenges. Additionally, Dr. Martinez has specialized interests working with and advocating for youth and families involved with the foster care system along with treating individuals with Tourette Syndrome and tics after her experiences working in specialty outpatient mental health settings with these different populations.
Dr. Martinez is further committed to mental health outreach and has provided education about different mental health topics in schools and community-based settings. She continues to enhance her own professional development to ensure she is providing her clients with the most current and well-supported practices.
Dr. Martinez approaches her work with clients by establishing a strong therapeutic relationship rooted in trust, empathy, and collaboration and creates a therapeutic space that embodies support, validation, and motivation. Dr. Martinez values helping clients understand their patterns in their thinking and behavior that may hold them back from their goals. She is dedicated to assisting them in developing personalized, effective strategies to cope with and overcome their challenges, uncovering their unique strengths, and helping them gain self-confidence to navigate their pathway towards positive change and healing.
